Upgrades can increase the value of armors, weapons and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and PvE Damage.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, armor, and weapons in order to provide them with a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. They can be obtained through making crafts, buying from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on devices that have slots. The item must be at least upgraded to blue level before the component can be used. Upgrade components, unlike other modifications, can only be applied only once. They are not able to be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a specific type of upgrade component used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment, as well as some of the non-ascended back items. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or completing a mission in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

You'll often see in the final game that placing Glyphs is the most effective method to upgrade your gear. Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to increase the stats of certain items by placing upgraded components into them. This is also known as "upping". Each upgradeable item has an amount, which determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum of 385. Each level of item requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require a certain ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained from the completion of Upgrade Recipes.
