Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

The ability to manipulate social variables that affect the manner of speaking in two or more steps can be a benefit. This feature can help researchers study the role of prosody in communicating across cultural contexts, a major challenge in cross-cultural pragmatics.

In the field of linguistics, DCT is among the most useful tools to study the behavior of communication learners. It can be used to examine various issues such as the manner of speaking, turn taking and lexical choices. It can be used to determine the level of phonological sophistication in learners in their speech.

Recent research has used the DCT as a tool to assess the skills of refusal among EFL students. Participants were presented with a range of scenarios to choose from and then asked to choose the most appropriate response. Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)

This study explored Chinese learners' pragmatic choices in their use of Korean by using a range of experimental tools, including Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs) as well as metapragmatic questionnaires and Refusal Interviews (RIs). Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate who participated in MQs, DCTs, and RIs. They were also required to provide reflections on their assessments and their refusals to participate in RIs. The results showed that CLKs frequently chose to reject native Korean pragmatic norms. First, the MQ data were analyzed to determine the participants' choices in terms of their pragmatics. The data were categorized according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. The results of the MQs, DCTs and z-tests were examined using descriptive statistics and z tests. The coding results are then contrasted with the original RI transcripts to determine how well they accurately portrayed the underlying behavior.

Refusal Interviews (RIs)

One of the most important questions in pragmatic research is why some learners are hesitant to adhere to pragmatic norms that native speakers use. Recent research sought to answer this question with several experiments, including DCTs MQs and RIs. The participants consisted of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs, and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. They were required to complete the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs either in their L1 or L2. Then, they were invited to a RI where they were asked to consider their responses to the DCT situations.

The results showed that, on average, the CLKs resisted the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even though they could produce native-like patterns. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their choice to learner-internal factors like their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also mentioned external factors, like relationship benefits. They also discussed, for instance, how their relations with their professors enabled them to perform better in terms of the linguistic and cultural standards of their university.

The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures or consequences they could be subject to when their social norms were not followed. They were worried that their native friends might perceive them as "foreignersand consider them incompetent. This is similar to the one expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These results suggest that native speakers pragmatic norms aren't the default preference for Korean learners. They could still be a useful model for official Korean proficiency tests. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reconsider their relevance in specific scenarios and in various contexts. This will enable them to better comprehend how different environments may impact the pragmatic behavior of students in the classroom and beyond. This will also help educators create better methods for teaching and testing Korean pragmatics. The interviewees were presented two situations, each involving an imagined interaction with their co-workers and were asked to choose one of the following strategies to employ when making a request. Interviewees were then asked to justify their choice. The majority of participants attributed their pragmatic resistance to their personality. TS for instance said she was difficult to get along with and refused to ask about the wellbeing of her colleague when they were working at a high rate despite the fact that she thought native Koreans would.
