Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Participants were 46 CLKs with upper-intermediate proficiency who gave responses to MQs and DCTs. They were also asked to reflect on their evaluation and refusal performance in RIs. The results showed that, on average, the CLKs rejected native-speaker pragmatic norms in more than 40% of their responses. They did so even though they could produce native-like patterns. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their decision to learner-internal variables such as their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors, like relational affordances. They also discussed, for instance how their relationships with their professors allowed them to perform better in terms of the linguistic and cultural expectations of their university.

The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures or penalties they could face if their local social norms were violated. They were concerned that their local friends might perceive them as "foreigners" and believe they are not intelligent. These findings suggest that native speakers' pragmatic norms are not the default preference for Korean learners. They may still be useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. This will allow them to better know how different cultures could affect the practical behavior of students in the classroom and beyond.
