Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions but the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.
The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially when they're an Bosch unit like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues in your car. It's an essential component of your audi key fobs's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is spinning. If the sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car key cover audi's components.
