Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Discourse Construction Tests
The discourse completion test (DCT) is widely used in the field of pragmatic research. It has many strengths but it also has some drawbacks. The DCT is one example. It cannot account cultural and individual variations. Additionally the DCT can be biased and could cause overgeneralizations. It is essential to analyze it carefully before it is used in research or assessment.
Despite its limitations the DCT is a useful tool to investigate the relationship between prosody, 프라그마틱 환수율 information structure and non-native speakers. Its ability to use two or more stages to manipulate the social variables that are related to politeness could be a benefit. This ability can be used to study the effect of prosody in different cultural contexts.
In the field of linguistics DCT is among the most effective tools used for analyzing communication behaviors of learners. It can be used to study a variety of issues such as politeness, turn taking, and lexical choices. It can also be used to assess the phonological difficulty of learners their speech.
Recent research used a DCT as an instrument to test the skills of refusal among EFL students. Participants were given a list of scenarios and were asked to select an appropriate response from the options offered. The researchers found the DCT to be more efficient than other methods of refusal, such as the use of a questionnaire or 프라그마틱 공식홈페이지 video recordings. Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)
This study investigated Chinese learners their pragmatic choices when they use Korean. It employed various tools for experimentation such as Discourse Completion Tasks, metapragmatic questions, and Refusal Interviews. Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate level who responded to MQs, DCTs and RIs. They were also required to provide reflections on their assessments and their refusals to participate in RIs. The results revealed that CLKs often resisted native Korean pragmatic norms, and that their choices were influenced by four main factors: their personalities, their multilingual identities, ongoing life histories, and relational advantages. These findings have implications for L2 Korean assessment and teaching.
The MQ data was first analyzed to identify the participants' practical choices. The data were categorized according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared the choices with their linguistic performance using DCTs to determine if they were indicative of pragmatic resistance. Additionally, the participants were asked to explain their decision to use pragmatic language in a given situation.
The results of the MQs, DCTs and z-tests were analysed using descriptive statistics and z tests. The CLKs were found use euphemistic terms such as "sorry" or "thank you". This is likely due to their lack of experience with the target languages, which led to an inadequate knowledge of korean's pragmatic norms. The results showed that CLKs' preferences to diverge from L1 and L2 norms or to move towards L1 norms varied based on the DCT circumstances. For example, in Situation 3 and 12, the CLKs preferred to diverge from both L1 and pragmatic norms, whereas in Situation 14 they preferred converging to L1 norms.
The RIs also revealed CLKs were aware of their pragmatic resistance in each DCT situation. The RIs were conducted one-to-one basis in the space of two days of the participants completing the MQs. The RIs were recorded and transcribing, and then coded by two independent coders. The coders worked in an iterative manner by the coders, re-reading and discussing each transcript. The results of coding are compared with the original RI transcripts to determine whether they reflected the actual behavior.
Interviews with Refusal
One of the major questions in pragmatic research is why learners decide to rescind pragmatic norms that native speakers use. A recent study attempted to answer this question by using a variety of experimental tools, including DCTs MQs, DCTs and RIs. Participants comprised 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. Participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs either in their L1 or their L2. Then they were invited to attend a RI where they were required to reflect on their responses to the DCT situations.
The results showed that, on average, the CLKs resisted native-speaker pragmatic norms in over 40% of their responses. They did so even though they could produce native-like patterns. They were also aware of their pragmatic resistance. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors, such as relationships and benefits. They described, for example, how their relationships with their professors allowed them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and social standards of their university.
The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures or consequences they might face in the event that their local social norms were violated. They were worried that their native friends would consider them "foreigners" and think they are not intelligent. This concern was similar in nature to the one expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These findings suggest that native speakers pragmatic norms aren't the preferred norm for Korean learners. They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency testing. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reassess their relevance in specific scenarios and in various contexts. This will help them better understand the effect of different cultural environments on the pragmatic behavior and classroom interactions of students from L2. They were questioned about their WTC/SPCC, pragmatic awareness, understanding and their knowledge of the world.
The interviewees were presented with two scenarios, each involving an imagined interaction with their interactants and were asked to select one of the following strategies to employ when making a request. The interviewees were asked to justify their choice. The majority of participants attributed their pragmatic resistance to their personalities. TS for instance stated that she was difficult to get along with and refused to ask about the wellbeing of her colleague when they were working at a high rate despite the fact that she thought native Koreans would.
