WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boost in specific statistics. Each upgrade increases item level by +3. Each upgrade also boosts a random substat.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless it has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like Eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The Item Level Upgrade upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapons. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and can be visited at any time to upgrade your gear. It is recommended to visit the upgrader once every couple of weeks to keep your equipment up to date.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current item level upgrade level of the gear being upgraded but they will always be less expensive than buying new gear from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items which can be used to upgrade weapons and tools, armor and other items. They can be bought by players from item upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon, or armor. button, which displays an item's preview at the next upgrade level in the event that the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and current item level and the weapon's price is higher than bracers or gloves, for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Upgraders for items are available in a variety of locations, including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount as well as a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases according to the number of items being upgraded, and can be increased by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only accessible through a variety means. This is both a positive and a disadvantage.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. When a player has an upgrade to a particular Best item upgrader level for a particular armor slot, upgrading other items to that level will be less expensive, even if they belong to another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is account-wide. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is cut as well, but is only available once certain milestones are reached.

Crests

Players have several options when it comes to upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more specific, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests can only be spent on equipment of a particular rank, and every rank has different requirements for its upgrade path. The most basic and straightforward upgrade path costs 15 crests, while the most complex may require as many as 20 crests depending on the type of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing tasks at the appropriate level. This could be done by doing outdoor activities or taking on dungeons and raids of all difficulties to get lower-level gear or Mythicbosses for raids, or dungeons with a heroic difficulty to obtain endgame gear. The crests can then be exchanged with an upgrader for the item such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and paths.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, but it will bring some changes to the process of upgrading. For instance, when an item upgrade reaches the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible level on all of their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests have one purpose therefore it's essential to use them properly. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the Best item upgrade gear you can find and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly relevant for rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to avail the account-wide discount if all slots are filled with top-quality gear.
