Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the group went on a world-wide tour to promote the album. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to feature a single song with the word "A" in its title. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
