How to Replace an audi spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit tricky because there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor replace audi key fob and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are audi tt key fob not working firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. I think the issue is in another location.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.
A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially when they're a Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an excellent choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues with your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your Audi Q3 Key since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning. The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins.
