Origins

Established in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the beginning of its existence, the company made products to meet the demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To accomplish this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country that produced ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s in order to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and market other manufacturers' products in order to enhance its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and increased the firm's market share in the world.

In the 1990s Toto began focusing on research and development for water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company embraced a just-in time approach to managing its supply chain and applied the same approach in its sales strategy. This led to a higher level customer satisfaction.
