In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of the previous albums. It was a stronger, more constant effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater proficiency on the drums, as well as a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than earlier recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album just a few months after, and went on a world tour to help promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
