Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

The MQ data was analyzed first to determine the participants' actual choices. The data was classified according to Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared the selections with their linguistic performance on the DCTs to determine if they are indicative of resistance to pragmatics. Interviewees also had to explain why they chose the pragmatic approach in certain situations.

The findings of the MQs and DCTs were then examined using descriptive statistics and z-tests. It was discovered that the CLKs often resorted to euphemistic responses such as "sorry" and "thank you." They did this despite the fact that they could create native-like patterns. In addition, they were conscious of their own pragmatism. They attributed their decisions to learner-internal factors like their personalities and multilingual identities as well as ongoing life experiences. They also spoke of external factors such as relational affordances. They outlined, for instance how their relationships with their professors allowed them to function more easily in terms of the cultural and linguistic norms at their university.

However, the interviewees also expressed concern about the social pressures and punishments that they might be subject to if they violated their social norms. They were concerned that their native interlocutors might view them as "foreigners" and think they were incompetent. These results suggest that native speakers' pragmatic norms are not the norm for Korean learners. They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency tests. Future researchers should reconsider the validity of these tests in different cultural contexts and in specific situations.
