How to Replace an audi new key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The audi replacement car keys will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor key for audi coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a audi spare key cost in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible, especially in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues with your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi car key because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points.
