Lexus Key Replacement - Replacing a Remote Or Fob

The battery in your key fob will eventually go out, regardless of whether it's an ordinary Lexus Key that turns the ignition or an intelligent key for your vehicle that starts by pressing the button. The replacement process is simple with a paperclip: Pop the existing battery out and replace it with the new one (refer to the owner's manual to determine which battery you need) and then secure it back in place.

Keys

Lexus keys can be difficult to replace. A specialist locksmith is required to create a spare that works. Each Lexus key has a microchip which must be programmed to communicate with the immobiliser system of your vehicle.

It requires a lot of time and specialized equipment for this procedure to be completed correctly. Each model comes with its own set of programming procedures. Replacing a remote or key fob is a costly job and repairer should be left to professionals unless you possess the appropriate tools and experience.

You will need to replace the batteries in your smart key or standard key. Both keys function by turning the barrel of the ignition. This can be done by yourself, but you will need a small Phillips Screwdriver, a 20p coin and a paperclip. On the back of the fob, you will find two or three screws loosen them and place them in a secure place (they're tiny and easy to lose). Remove the fob, revealing an indentation with a circular pattern where the metal key will be. Take the battery out by using a paperclip. Then, insert the new battery, making sure that it is inserted correctly. Clip the the key back together.

Remotes

Lexus remotes and fobs can be difficult to replace and require locksmiths who are well-versed and have the proper tools. Certain models require that the chip inside the key be reprogrammed in order to work with the car's immobiliser system. These chips are programmed by different methods depending on the model of Lexus. This is accomplished by using a special device that sends an electronic signal to the chip that matches the code used to open the doors and start the engine.

Certain Lexus cars are designed with a key head that is a combination of the key head and the remote. They are easy to replace because there is no separate chip to replace. This type of key is also less expensive.

No matter what type of key regardless of the type of key, all fobs eventually run out of battery power. It can be a frustrating experience, but with a little knowledge you can get your Lexus up and running. Check out the owner's manual to determine which battery type you need. Find an alternative. Find a small hole in the inside of the fob and insert an item of currency (a 20p piece works well) and twist. This should reveal the flat spot, which you can employ a paperclip to take away.

Then, take the old battery out and replace the new one. Make sure that the new battery is in the correct direction of operation. Then, clip the outside of the fob back to its original position and insert the key back into the metal.

Transponder Chips

The majority of new cars built since 1995 have transponder chips within the key head to disable the immobiliser system. The head of a key which includes a transponder chips can be removed to reveal a metallic L-shaped key. A transponder chip replacement key or fob is a multi-stage procedure. It involves cutting the keys precisely and programming the chip to sync up with the vehicle's immobiliser.

Transponders are electronic chip equipped with Non-Volatile memory (NVM) that houses a set of windings (very fine wire twisted around a tube) which look similar to ones found in an electric motor. The windings create a coded signal for the car to read. If the code is correct it will allow the car to start.

There are two types of transponder chip, the one is known as the 80-bit, while the second is known as the circle + (General Motors). The former can be reused but it needs to be unlocked by a special machine to work in another compatible vehicle. The second type is more difficult to use as the older keys could be broken, drilled or thrown out when key cases are changed. However they can be used with a service-key that does not require a battery.

Immobiliser Systems

Immobiliser systems are electronic security measures which prevent thieves from starting your car. It operates by sending a signal from the vehicle to the key whenever you attempt to start it. The electronic chip inside the key responds with a unique code which must match the one found in the vehicle to start. If the codes do not match, the engine will shut down immediately, and stop theft of your vehicle.

Modern smart keys and fobs have embedded transponder chips that stores electronic security in a format that can't be easily duplicated. When the key or fob is inserted into the ignition, they transmit this code to the ECU. The ECU will then check it against the code stored in its memory. It then activates the ignition system and fuel circuit if the two coincide. If the codes don't match, your engine will not start, even if a thief tries to short-circuit the ignition circuit.

Replacing a lost lexus key or damaged key is a multi-stage process which involves precise cutting the new blade for the key and programming it to synch with the immobiliser system of your vehicle. There are many different immobilisers used in different models and years, and each requires the use of a unique programming method. We utilize Ross-Tech software to ensure that your replacement key is programmed correctly for optimal performance and security.
