World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it can boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a certain amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all its leveled up benefits (attack magic attack, attack defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high, depending on the upgrader you choose and the kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is because of how many perks need to be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.

The level of an item upgrading is a popular measure of power, and can be found on all item tooltips. It is also used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to an lower level). The average level of the item can be found in the character sheet.

When deciding whether to buy or sell equipment, players can compare the item level. It's a measure of the damage and quality. The level of the item can be used to evaluate items when examining a vendor's inventory.

On PC, you can check the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the complete item description, including its level. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are various theories about how the item level calculation is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different values and that gems in sockets add to the overall value of the item. This can lead to a calculated item's ilvl that is typically very close to Blizzards actual item level.

It's not the only factor that affects the value of an item. The degree of the area in which the item dropped can also alter its stats. For example it can add a level to the item's haste or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more the ilvl than items from lower level instances.

Item Stats

Item stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The stat mods of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by the player's level.

The upgrades to an item can boost its stats. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. A white or grey item for instance, can only be upgraded once however, items with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.

Another method of altering the stats of an item is to use affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and are available in all shapes and sizes. The affixes can be used to give the item extra damage, or give a specific capability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing the duration of cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving an additional name to the item.

At present, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circling arrows. It will cost a set amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges as with other rerolling methods.

In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which stats to be kept on an item when it is upgraded. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However each item will have at least one stat within the same range, unless it's an exclusive item or an item that has a God Roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could change is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to reroll the attaches, or select which stats to increase. Like the base equipment, this must be done per item, and the item comparison interface wouldn't display all possible stats at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the odds of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. It does not, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player a chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game, and is therefore more valuable in the early game as opposed to later ones, as most players prioritize higher weapon scaling and defenses over the raw damage gain.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading that increase with each item level. These can also be enhanced by using anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can then be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to give +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of an item, up to 140.

Moreover some items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be purchased in the shops or made using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent themselves from losing an item if the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading the item, and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to the extent to which success rates can be increased, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%..

The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the luck of that item. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent, and each item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

The item upgrade overlays are displayed above items in the inventory. This may cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
