The ability to upgrade items allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.

Usually, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, while items with strong bases like eth titans do not vary significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They can be used as an attribute bonus or extra effect, while the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, gathered in loot, dropped by enemies or received as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. If an individual upgrades a gathering tool and replaces glyphs with another glyph the old one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, excluding the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from previous versions in some important ways. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a certain number of times before being "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level, but the required materials aren't as high.
