How to Replace an Audi Keys Replacement Cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test as there are various connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU

If you experience any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly if they're an Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your vehicle.
