How to Replace an Audi Replacement key Service G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It's a bit tricky to test as there are different pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor Audi Tt Key case is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do, but i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these audi keyless go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.
A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially when they're a Bosch model like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this part is also a good option.
5. Tachometer
