How to Replace an audi spare key Cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine without sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.
I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

5. Tachometer
A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues with your vehicle. The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points.
